Embrace the excellence of our Merbau, a timber celebrated for its outstanding quality and enduring strength sourced directly from the Indonesia.
Merbau is brown-grey to dark reddish-brown with various shades. The color differences between the individual boards are natural and usual. The annual rings of this type of wood are not noticeable. This wood has an almost uniform texture without defects and sapwood.
Merbau is generally considered robust and very hard. It is very durable in every aspect and is stable after drying. Thanks to its unique properties and excellent stability, it is one of the world's best species. Merbau is durable and has a long life due to its high density and its substances. It is naturally resistant to fungi, insects and weather conditions. Merbau resembles teak wood in properties, but it is much harder. It resembles Palisander in hardness.
So if you like symmetry and beauty like Merbau, we recommend it to you.
Wood is a hygroscopic material, and for this reason, it changes its shape depending on air humidity. Depending on air humidity and ambient temperature, this humidity change process is reversible but does not occur on the same plane. For the same relative humidity and air temperature, the wood's moisture is higher during desorption than during absorption, with a range of relative humidity RH 30% - 90% by 2.5% to 3.5%. It means that the wood reduces its volume during drying and does not return to its original dimension when moisture is taken back. This fact has a fundamental influence on the behavior of the Merbau terrace in Kiln-dry state.
There are changes in humidity and long-term rain, snow, melting snow ..), and boards will increase their sizes in this period, but by 2.5 - 3.5% of their current width. Furthermore, it should be noted that the terrace panels are cut in different orientations to the trunk axis, tangentially, radially but also semi-radially, which affects the drying in dimensional percentages. Therefore there are always different dimensions in the gaps between the boards laid with the same expansion.
We recommend dilation gaps between 6 - 8 mm.
We recommend that you treat all the edges of your Merbau decking with Osmo Wax for Cutting Edges No. 5735 prior to installation. If you decide to finish your Merbau deck, you can do so after approximately three months of direct exposure to the elements.
If you choose not to finish the surface of the deck, a gray patina will develop. Graying is caused by sunlight and water. The main component of radiation that causes wood to turn gray is UV radiation. The wood molecules absorb this radiation. Due to radiation and water, a gray patina forms on the surface and in the depths of the wood. This gray patina eventually becomes a natural protection against further exposure to UV radiation.
