Benefits of Cumaru decking

  • Unrivaled Durability: Cumaru, a South American hardwood, boasts exceptional density and strength, making it one of the most durable decking materials available. Its impressive Janka hardness rating of 3,540 lbs ensures your deck can withstand heavy foot traffic and even the harsh Australian climate without showing signs of wear and tear.
  • Natural Defense: Cumaru's natural oils and tannins protect against insects, mould, and rot, keeping your deck pristine for years to come. This inherent resistance eliminates the need for harsh chemical treatments, making it a safe and eco-friendly choice for your family and the environment.
  • Low Maintenance, High Reward: Spend more time enjoying your deck and less time maintaining it. Cumaru's natural resilience means occasional cleaning with mild soap and water is all that's needed to keep it looking its best.
  • Weather Warrior: From scorching summers to chilly winters, Cumaru can handle it all. Its natural oils protect the wood from warping, cracking, and fading, ensuring your deck remains structurally sound and visually stunning through the seasons.
  • A Feast for the Eyes: Cumaru's rich, warm colour palette, ranging from reddish-brown to golden hues, adds a touch of luxury to any outdoor space. As it ages, Cumaru develops a beautiful silver-grey patina, further enhancing its character and charm.
  • Sustainable and Eco-Conscious: We source our Cumaru from responsibly managed forests, ensuring your decking choice supports sustainable forestry practices.
  • Cost-Effective Investment: While the initial investment in Cumaru decking might be higher than some alternatives, its longevity, minimal maintenance needs, and exceptional durability make it a cost-effective choice in the long run.
  • Safety First: Cumaru's natural slip resistance and resistance to splintering make it a safe and comfortable surface for bare feet, children, and pets.

Cumaru decking

Cumaru wood (also known as Brazilian Teak, Dipteryx odorata, Almendrillo, Tonka, and Tonquin Bean) is a light to dark chocolate brown, occasionally transitioning to an olive brown hue. Color variations between individual boards are natural and common. It offers a wide range of pleasant, warm tones from honey brown, golden brown, to reddish brown, which complement each other beautifully. The grain of Cumaru is often interwoven and wavy, creating a very interesting texture. The tones of this wood are very warm and create a relaxing feeling.

Cumaru wood is generally considered to be strong and very hard. Due to its high density and extremely high content of natural substances, it has a long lifespan.

Maintenance Tips for Cumaru decking

To ensure your Cumaru decking continues to look its best and lasts for years, follow these simple maintenance tips:

  • Regular cleaning: Sweep the deck regularly to remove debris and wash it with mild, soapy water and a soft brush a couple of times a year to prevent mold and mildew build-up.
  • Oil treatments: We recommend that Cumaru decking be waxed on all edges before installation (Osmo Wax for Cutting Edges No. 5735) to protect against moisture penetration. If you decide to finish your Cumaru deck, you can do so after approximately three months of direct exposure to the elements.
  • The Silver patina: If you choose not to finish the deck surface, a silver-grey patina will develop. Greying is caused by sunlight and water. The main component of radiation that causes wood to turn grey is UV radiation. The wood molecules absorb this radiation. Radiation and water create a grey patina on the surface and in the depths of the wood. This grey patina eventually becomes a natural protection against further exposure to UV radiation. Many Cumaru deck owners appreciate this natural aging process for its aesthetic appeal.
  • Avoid painting or staining: To preserve the natural beauty and characteristics of Cumaru, avoid painting or staining the wood. Instead, opt for oil treatments that enhance its natural hues and offer protection.
  • Prompt repair: Address any signs of damage or wear promptly to prevent further deterioration. Replace damaged boards and secure loose ones as needed.

By following these simple maintenance practices, you can ensure that your Cumaru deck remains a beautiful and long-lasting addition to your outdoor living space.
